Neonatal ICU Transport — Premature Twins to Specialists
Emergency NICU air ambulance from rural Thailand to Singapore neonatal center
Premature twins born at 28 weeks in a rural Thai hospital needed immediate transfer to Singapore's National University Hospital NICU — one of Asia's top neonatal units. The local hospital could stabilize but lacked the specialized equipment for long-term neonatal intensive care. Commercial medevac services couldn't guarantee dual-incubator capacity, and the nearest suitable NICU aircraft was reportedly 18 hours away.
VOLO's medical operations team identified a Learjet 45 with neonatal configuration in Bangkok — 2 hours from the rural hospital. We coordinated with NUH to dispatch a neonatal transport team of 3 (neonatologist, NICU nurse, respiratory therapist) on a separate aircraft to meet at the rural hospital. Both incubators were pre-warmed and equipped with ventilators, cardiac monitors, and IV pumps. Thai and Singaporean medical authorities fast-tracked all cross-border medical clearances.
Both twins were transported safely to NUH within 6 hours of the initial call. The neonatologist later confirmed that the speed of transfer was decisive — both infants required interventions only available at a Level IV NICU. After 8 weeks of care, both twins were discharged healthy. The family's insurance covered the full transport cost under emergency medical evacuation.
